Hey, it beats walking the plank! Find your feet and your courage to answer Jesus as he calls out his invitation to swing your legs over the side, stand up, and take a walk with him on the waters of faith.

Holy Thursday--Fall on Your Knees
Posted on April 05, 2012 12:22
How do I “fall to my knees” before God in my life, not just during the Holy Thursday procession, but every day?

Holy Week is here! Try to experience at least one of these once-a-year Masses and traditions:
The Master Has Need of Us ...

My upper room, my soul, is the place where Jesus intends to celebrate the covenant with his friends. Do I see his request as a burden or a joy? Do I let them in? Is my soul spacious, furnished, and prepared?

Easter is coming, but still feels so far away. We may have lost the verve we had a month ago. Here's some hope to carry us through the rest of Lent.

As we mark the halfway point of Lent, it’s a good time to reflect on our journey.
The Love Story Called Lent
Posted on March 02, 2012 13:41
Lent has a lot of visual cues that can help us raise our minds and hearts to God.

There is a beautiful and dynamic dialogue between giving up and taking up, one that is capable of drawing us deeper. In order to take up anything, I must be free of those things I otherwise hold on to—perhaps more accurately those things which hold onto me.

This Mardi Gras, "fatten up" your spiritual repertoire for Lent!

In a sense, we can view Lent as the annual long-term assignment of Christian disciples everywhere. It is the time the Church gives us to prepare for the fullness of salvation that God offers us through the resurrection of his Son Jesus.

We are called to live Lent in the light of the resurrection, which is all about God’s desire to be in relationship with us.

The kids in our lives are watching us, and they can tell in a flash whether we're content to be mere spectators of the spiritual life or whether we ourselves are active participants in it.

While celebrations of Martin Luther King’s life and legacy have both multiplied and broadened over the years, the number of those following his example has not. Our world has certainly not run out of injustices. But I think we have run rather low on the one thing it takes to produce and sustain a leader like MLK: faith.

Today’s Gospel is all about finding—where do I fit in to all of this?
1st Things First: Mary, Mother of God
Posted on January 02, 2012 12:47
Mary is the Immaculate Conception, the Queen of Apostles, the Virgin most admirable. She is also the House of Gold, the Mystical Rose, the Comforter of the Afflicted, Our Lady of the Rosary, and a host of other worthy titles. But as wonderful as they are, all those roles flow from Mary’s most unique grace.

Joy to the World...Really!
Posted on December 22, 2011 12:13
This time of year, the word “joy” is pretty common parlance. But do we stop to think about what joy really is?
"It came without packages, boxes or bags!"

This blessed season, here's one way address children’s expectations and potential disappointments and help them see how God (not Santa!) will surprise them this Christmas.

Carols present the faith's core teachings. They also give kids (and all of us!) some of the basic vocabulary we need to speak about Jesus and what his coming means for all of us.

The whole point of the feast of Christ the King is not Christ’s lordship over us, but His lordship within us.
Praying with Scripture—What Should I Do?
Posted on November 03, 2011 10:10
A simple question sent my mind spinning this week, and led me to reflect on the gift of the Word of God, and how to share it with others.

...But if we adults think of the saints as people we should imitate in that very literal way, we’re missing the whole point of All Saints Day. We are all called to be saints. You don’t need a sword, a nun’s habit, or a miter to be holy—unless, of course, you’re a soldier, a sister, or a bishop! You don’t need to “dress up” as anything or anyone but who you are, because God made you to be holy in a one-of-a-kind, unrepeatable way.

...It’s important to remember, though, that the children in our lives may not remember John Paul very well. It may not seem like it, but seven years have already passed since his death. Children under 12 are unlikely to remember him at all. Those in High School will probably recall him only as he appeared in his last years, a frail and suffering “servant of the servants of God.”

Have you ever felt like someone expected you to do the impossible? We all have some pretty crazy expectations now and then, but when it becomes clear to us that suspending the laws of nature just isn’t an option, where do we go?
