A couple of months ago, I was helping out in our bookcenter in Dedham, MA. A woman came in looking for something for her niece and nephew, whose mother had just passed away. Up until recently, I would have scrambled to try to find something helpful, sensitive, and child-friendly. But that day in the bookcenter, I knew right where to look: the display table with I Will Remember You, released this year by Pauline Kids.
I Will Remember You: My Catholic Guide through Grief by Kimberly B. Schuler helps children ages 7-12 give voice to their feelings at the loss of a loved one. Through reflection, prayer, and specially designed activities, it guides children through their grief and helps them understand death, funeral rituals, the grieving process, and what to expect during the first year. It is fully informed by the truths of the Catholic faith and by the author's own experience as a certified school counselor.
What stands out to me about this book is the gentleness that it communicates. From the sensitively worded text, to the beautiful illustrations, to the whole layout of the book, it sends a message of peace, comfort, courage, and strength. I wholeheartedly recommend it for children who are grieving. And as we celebrate the month of November, during which we pray especially for the souls of those who have gone before us, I invite you to join us in prayer also for children experiencing loss this day.
In prayer,
Sr Emily
